You Can’t Travel Abroad With A Damaged Passport Jul 26

When a passport becomes damaged, it should be replaced with a new one. In most cases, even if the passbook only has slight water damage, airline personnel or security staff will refuse it. This can put quite a damper on the travel plans, so take steps to replace the damaged passport in advance of traveling.

A damaged passbook is an unacceptable form of documentation and should be surrendered to the government. At the time of surrender, the passbook holder will need to apply for a new passbook. The renewal process will not be relevant to these individuals because the passbook renewal instructions provided by the government state that the most recent passbook must be undamaged in order to obtain renewal.

The person with a damaged passport will need to obtain the DS-11 application document through the State Department Web site, Passport Acceptance Facility, or Passport Agency. The online version of the form may be completed either electronically or by hand, but it must then be printed. It cannot be submitted online, due to current government policy. If the form is completed by hand, the applicant should print legibly, because anything that cannot be read by the government agents will delay processing.

Applicants must take this application and other required documentation to a Passport Agency or Acceptance Facility. They should not sign or date the DS-11 application until they are instructed to do so by the government agent. The agent will require that applicants provide their Social Security number and this information will be verified.

The documents required in addition to the passbook application prove the individual’s citizenship and identity. A certified birth certificate or previously issued undamaged U.S. Passport may be supplied. The birth certificate must have a registrar seal, signature, and filing date. Those who were born in another country may provide a naturalization or citizenship certificate or a certification or report of birth abroad issued by a consulate. Those who do not have any of these may submit certain forms of secondary documentation for the U.S. passport as listed by the State Department on its website.

Each form of identification must be accompanied by a photocopy of the item. There are very detailed instructions regarding how these photocopies must be made, so applicants should refer to the government Web site. An identifying witness that testifies to the identity of the applicant must submit a photocopy of identification as well. All of these stipulations serve a purpose and that is to verify that the applicant is legitimate.

Two identical copies of a color photo of the applicant must also be supplied. These will be used to create the passbook document so they need to measure two by two inches. They must have been taken within the past six months and reflect a full view of the front of the applicant’s face.. All of the requirements for photos are listed on the Department of State Web site, so applicants should read this information carefully to avoid rejection of photos. An application fee of $100 must also be submitted and an additional $20 will be due if the applicant would like a passport card. The applicant will receive the passbook in the mail within four to six weeks.

 

When your passbook is damaged, you need to get a need a replacement passport. This will require that the individual complete the DS-11 form and provide proof of citizenship and identity. Color photos and an application fee must also be submitted. The information will be processed and within four to six weeks, the individual will have a U S passport and no worries about being detained by customs.
