Humans figured out that if you have two pieces of flat metal that are sharpened and connect it in such way that they slide against each other then you have the hand held tool which we call scissors. It is usually used to cut weaker materials such as paper, hair and cloth.
Long gone are the days when the scissor was just one type of design. Today’s scissors are designed for specific tasks, which is accomplished by their specific design. An excellent example of that is children’s scissors which are generally very dull and can only be used for cutting paper. And scissors that are used for cutting a little denser materials such as cardboard and certain type of fabrics will be made to be sharper and thicker metal, shears will be used to cut plants and metal.
Other examples of specialized scissors include ones that are designed specifically for sewing which have one sharp end and other will be a blunt end to help the tailor cut difficult designs. There are also special scissors used by manicurists and pedicurists with curved blades, to trim finger and toe nails.
The ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians get credit for inventing the fist scissors. They did it somewhere around 3 millennia ago. Those were invented during the bronze age and were of simple design compared to nowadays. It was basically just a sharp piece two flat metals that was designed in way so that they slide against each other.
Nowadays scissor design has come a long way with so many designs for specific purposes. They accomplish that by changing the angle of the blades, such as off set blades, and changing the fulcrum.
