Many Americans could imagine living without a car, but we really need to start doing some things a little different. Just think back to when you first went to the station and paid $3.89 a gallon. You probably felt sick to your stomach.
Ever since, sales of hybrids and smaller vehicles have been on the rise. Saving money at the pump may be out of your control, but there are things you can do on your end to make sure your get the most value out of every gallon of gas.
#1 On a regular bases, change the air filter — Your car has an internal combustion engine. That means the fuel mixed with air is what makes the engine work. If your air filter is clogged up you could be losing up to 10% of your fuel efficiency. Change the air filter a couple times a year. It is actually very easy and very inexpensive. It is seriously something you can do yourself, usually for under $10.
#2 Drive correctly — This is a simple one, yet nobody ever thinks about it. Most people keep their foot on the gas pedal and brake pedal longer than they should. You don’t need to gun it and you don’t need to wait until the last minute to brake. Try it. And you may see between 5-10% better fuel efficiency.
#3 Don’t go 90 mph — Once you get over 70 mph or so, the fuel efficiency drops dramatically. Use the cruise control to keep a constant speed and you with end up getting the best fuel economy that your car will get.
#4 Tune ups — Another thing people should do, but people fail to do this. In your owners manual there will be a section that recommends getting your car tuned up. It is there for a reason. Follow what it says and your car will last longer and run correctly.
#5 Sweat it out to save at the pump — Especially in older cars that don’t recycle air through the cabin. If you can roll down the window, mostly if you have a older car, do it. You will save at the pump.
We all could use the extra dough, so try a few of these things out. They really can help if you just give them a shot.
