Holbox Island is an exclusive location that is located just northwest of Cancun, Mexico. It is actually located only just a few miles from the coast of Mexico. These two coasts are separated by a shallow lagoon that is identified as a refuge for a huge number of exotic birds and fish. There are a selection of Holbox hotels here for tourists to enjoy. Some are featured on the beach front while some are situated within the village itself.
The island was originally inhabited by Mayan indians, and was heavily pirated in the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to its strategic location. In the 19th century, many that sought refuge from the Mayan social uprising traveled here, but only in 1974 did it become a federal state of Mexico with a whole lot of potential for tourist development.
