Typical Costa Rica Weather Conditions

Christopher Columbus reached Costa Rica in late September of 1502.  With an armada of four small ships, the great navigator had battled against storms along the coast of Central America and believed he had reached Asia. He was forced to take shelter near present day Puerto Limon on the Caribbean coast, where he found a village called Cariai.

The Native Americans Columbus met wore golden ornaments and the farther he sailed along the coast, the more gold the people seemed to have. The land was named ‘Costa Rica’, meaning ‘rich coast’ in Spanish, but the Europeans dream of a coast rich in gold was short lived.  Most of the gold they had seen came from other parts of Central America. There was no gold near the coast.

Sports Fishing N Costa Rica - Puerto Jimenez

One of my friends and her husband own Tropic Fins Adventures. Which is a sports fishing outfit in Puerto Jimenez. Once they invited us to join them one afternoon for inshore fishing. We said yes but we didn’t have any idea of what was coming. I’m not much of a fisherman and my husband has a bit more experience than I do.

Now Cory, the captain and the guide who has over 15 years experience fishing, has taken lots of professional fishermen and showed them the best time of their lives. I thought he wouldn’t be much excited about taking newbie fishers such as us.

A Cute Town With Great Attractions - Cahuita, Costa Rica

If you are looking for the big fans of the Southern Caribbean region of Costa Rica, hey, I am one! Yes I’ve been to Puerto Viejo at least four times but I never made it to its neighboring village, Cahuita, which is much smaller that Puerto Viejo, but has everything you need! The length of the main street wouldn’t exceed one kilometer, and is obviously a dirt road. But the main attraction is, it has a whole lot of delicious restaurants along it.

On the Verge of Extinction, the Critically Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle May Be the Most Amazing Animal on Earth

Though most people have never heard of it the leatherback sea turtle could be the most amazing animal on earth. Today there are only six remaining species of marine turtle, and uncounted eons in the past its forebears had four legs and lived on land. About a hundred ten million years ago, its legs and feet developed into massive flippers and it began to populate the Seven Seas, before there were Seven Seas.

Way back then, the world was a very different place. The Tibetan and Indian Himalayas would not be created for another 65 million years. Antarctica and Australia were still almost connected when the first ancestors of leatherbacks moved into the sea. Tens of millions of generations of turtles lived and died before those two continents assumed the positions they occupy today. Antarctica was near Africa and its weather was still temperate. The southern Atlantic Ocean was still forming as over countless eons South America moved away from what is now Africa.
